Do I need to worry about my heart or preexisting conditions before I exercise?

  • Exercise is beneficial for most people and under most circumstances of chronic illness. People that exercise regularly have a lower risk for heart attacks, and exercise is now known to benefit liver disease and its complications.

  • On occasion, it is necessary to get clearance from a medical provider prior to starting an exercise program given that certain illnesses can put you at risk for adverse events or injury.

  • The most frequent systems or organs that need to be assessed prior to an exercise prescription include: the heart and blood vessels; lungs and airways; brain, spine and nerves; and bones, joints and muscle.

  • In the associated video you will find some pertinent information for patients and providers to review before starting an exercise program.

  • Should you have any doubt about your medical circumstances or whether you need to see a doctor before starting to exercise, please ask your primary care physician or your liver doctor before using EL-FIT.

  • Remember that your capacity to exercise is likely lower than what you remember from when you were healthier, and you might need to adjust to your medical needs to maximize both performance and safety.

  • EL-FIT encourages you to exercise, but just remember: Start Low and Go Slow
